Strengthening families after years of separation
Latino families reuniting after prolonged separation due to various migratory circumstances face unique challenges related to the physical and emotional trauma they’ve experienced. At the same time, these families are experiencing the stresses of learning a new language, adapting to school and work demands, and facing economic challenges.
Our Family Reunification work has focused on providing family-based, psycho-educational workshops in Spanish to Latino families who have been separated. Participating families develop skills to improve communication and build resilience.
- Since 2019, LHI has been partnering with Identity, Inc to deliver bilingual and culturally competent family reunification workshops to adolescents and their parents or caregivers.
- The Latino Health Initiative Family Reunification Program was the 2019 recipient of a National Association of Counties (NACo) Best in Category Award in Human Services
