Popular Version of the Blueprint for Latino Health in Montgomery County, Maryland 2008-2012
A Guide in Spanish for the Community is Now Available
In June 2010, the Latino Health Initiative released a popular version of the Blueprint for Latino Health in Montgomery County 2008-2012 in Spanish. This version of the document was designed as a tool to increase community participation in decisions that affect the health of Latinos. In simple language and filled with graphics, this document outlines the seven priorities and subsequent recommendations, identified through a participatory process, for identifying the needs of the Latino population. This document will be disseminated among active community leaders including Latino lay health promoters, program participants, and other concerned County residents to guide their actions in influencing policies that will improve the health of Latinos in Montgomery County.
Latino Health Initiative Forges Partnership with National Welcome Back Initiative
In April 2010, the formerly called, “Foreign Trained Health Professionals (FTHP) Program,” of the Latino Health Initiative officially changed its name to, “The Suburban Maryland Welcome Back Center,” during a ceremony hosted by Secretary Alex Sanchez and Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett. The event, which took place in Wheaton, Maryland, launched the official partnership between Montgomery County, Maryland, and the Welcome Back Initiative, a nationwide network of Welcome Back Centers across the U.S. assisting internationally trained health professionals to re-enter the health workforce.
Several representatives of elected officials and the public in general attended the event as well as Welcome Back Center partners, supporters, advisory council members, participants, and staff. More than 100 people attended the event and Center staff received over 280 calls during the following weeks (125+ calls were made by foreign-trained health professionals).
